Preseason Offensive Player of the Year -- Aaron Perez, quarterback, Sanger, 5-11, 190, sr.: Directing the Apaches' combination wing-T and triple-option offense for the third season, he'll see nothing he hasn't seen before. And, at 190 pounds, he's 25 pounds heavier than when it all started.
Preseason Defensive Player of the Year -- Ian Taubler, end, Bullard, 6-4 1/2, 235, jr.: Major-college prospect and one of the most imposing players in the section, he has been offered a scholarship by Fresno State. And Yale would like him to join his older brother, quarterback Kerr, at the Ivy League program. But Cal has the edge at this point, only the Bears haven't decided whether his future position is defensive end or tight end.

Best barbershop banter: New coach Jim O'Brien could lose as many games in his first season at Edison as he did in his previous four at Fowler (40-8). This would reflect not on his coaching ability but an unforgiving schedule that will pin the young Tigers, who will start 16 underclassmen a year after winning the Division II title, as certain underdogs in their first seven games -- Clovis East, Bakersfield, Merced, Buchanan and Clovis West in nonleague play before Bullard and Sanger to open the CMAC. Then come Sunnyside and Madera, both of which promise to be stoked under new coaches, and Memorial, which returns firepower off a 10-2 team.
