Q & A with Willy Irwin, Clovis East High

A year after placing second in the discus (188-8) and fourth in the shot put (58-7 1/2) while leading Clovis East to a tie for the state team title, senior Willy Irwin is top-seeded in the discus (199-9) with a throw that ranks No. 1 in the state and No. 7 nationally.

He's also ranked fifth in the state in the shot put (61-51/2). He plans on participating in football and track and field at Fresno City.

Question: The 199-9 discus throw in the Central Section Grand Masters beat your previous best by 10 feet. What happened?

Answer: It just felt like a practice throw and it kept flying. Everything just clicked.

So now what at the state meet?

I think I can break 200 and, hopefully, I can win with a 200-foot throw. That's my goal.

And how about the shot?

I'm looking for a 63 or 64.

If you win a gold medal, what would be more satisfying: that or last year's team title?

That would be great to win [a gold medal], but there's nothing like winning the whole thing for the team.

Get any goods for winning the state team championship?

Yeah, a ring and a watch.

Ever wear them?

All the time.
