Porterville High's Jessup on way to boys state golf tourney

Porterville High's Nate Jessup qualified for the California high school championships, shooting a 6-under 66 while finishing fourth Thursday at the Southern California Regional at the Golf Club at Rancho California.

Jessup, who won the Central Section title last week, is among six golfers and three teams that advance to the state tournament -- scheduled for Tuesday at Santa Maria Country Club.

The next-best Fresno-area finisher was Clovis West's Grant Yamaguchi, 24th at 2-under 70.

Bullard High finished ninth as a team, shooting a 29-over 389. The Knights were led by Brandon Stites and Nick Sorensen, with 3-over 75s. Stockdale, the other Central Section team qualifier, was seventh at 381.

Torrey Pines (357) was the champion and advanced along with Servite-Anaheim (363) and Santa Barbara (364). Jake Katz of Westlake was the individual champ, winning in a playoff after a three-way tie at the top at 65.
