Clovis West may lose top national baseball rank

Clovis West High likely will lose its No. 1 national ranking in baseball after the Golden Eagles were stunned by visiting Madera 7-5 Friday night in a Tri-River Athletic Conference game.

The Eagles, also ranked No. 1 in the Central Section by The Bee, had achieved the national top-ranking late last month from the newspaper Baseball America.

With runners on second and third and one out in the top of the seventh, Madera's Anthony Mindt doubled off the left-field wall to drive in two.

Mindt finished with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs.

Zach Taylor -- 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI on the day -- then singled Mindt home to cap the scoring for Madera (11-14, 2-11).

James Brager had 12 strikeouts in his complete-game win.

Mike Gilleland led Clovis West (23-3, 11-2) with two homers and three RBIs.

The Golden Eagles hadn't lost since an 8-1 defeat to Clovis East on March 26.
