Sports briefs: Sunbirds men win 7th straight

No. 25 Fresno Pacific opened its game at No. 16 Azusa Pacific with 16 unanswered points en route to an 85-75 men's basketball victory, its seventh straight in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Alex Davenport led five Sunbirds in double figures with 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. James Lewis added 19 points, Todd Brown 17, Craig Ash 13 and Jordan Wild 11.

Fresno Pacific (21-5, 11-5) avenged a two-point loss to the Cougars (17-9, 10-6) in Fresno.

- The visiting Sunbirds women gave No. 7 Azusa Pacific all it could handle before falling 75-65.

Jessica Torrecillas had 18 points to pace Fresno Pacific (6-20, 3-13). Michele Rebozzi scored 14 and Jessica Mazza 13.

CVC honors Hall, Shew

West Hills College's Jason Hall and Porterville's Alex Shew were named men's and women's Central Valley Conference basketball Players of the Week.

Hall scored 35 points -- a CVC season high -- in a win against Reedley and 31 in a loss to Porterville. The sophomore guard was 22 for 34 shooting from the field and made 11 of 20 3-pointers.

Shew, a freshman guard, scored a career-high 34 points in a win at Taft and is averaging a CVC-best 26.3 per game.

- Reedley College's women's tennis team won the 16-school Mission Tournament in Santa Clara last weekend.

- Stanislaus State announced it has signed three soccer players for next season from Clovis Unified high schools. Midfielder Allison Case and defender Lauren Thornton, both from Clovis West, are set to join the women's team; 6-foot-4 defender Kyle Cadigan from Buchanan signed with the men's team.
