THE BUZZ

Perhaps only in boys soccer could a Tranquillity victory over Avenal -- both with enrollments of fewer than 675 students -- cause a ripple in the overall rankings of a Central Section sport. Despite a 6-0 loss to Tranquillity on Friday, Avenal will maintain a spot in the rankings, and stay ahead of the Tigers in Division VI, because of its overall body of work, which includes victories over Clovis West, Hanford and Golden West, and a narrow 1-0 loss to Farmersville. But it's a tenuous hold, with a rematch looming Feb. 2.

THE BUZZ

Behind nationally ranked Buchanan, the hottest team in the Central Section might be Bullard. The Knights' only loss to a section opponent came against the four-time defending Division I champion Bears, 2-1 on Dec. 12 at the Peggy Renberg Tournament. A showdown with County/Metro Athletic Conference rival Clovis North looms Friday for Bullard.

Central Valley Christian has won five straight and looks like the team to beat in Division IV.
