8 top-ranked wrestlers set to compete in Clovis tourney

The largest gathering of state-ranked wrestlers the San Joaquin Valley will see before the CIF State Championships are set to descend on Clovis High this weekend for the Doc Buchanan Invitational.

The sport's showcase event in the Fresno area is scheduled to host 99 of the 222 wrestlers ranked by thecaliforniawrestler.com -- including 62 of the 112 in the top 8 -- and 15 of the top 25 teams.

The only tournament to feature more talent within a two-hour drive of Fresno is the CIF State Championships on March 5-6 at Bakersfield's Rabobank Arena.

Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. today and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday. The finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday.

Eight of the state's 14 No. 1- ranked wrestlers -- Selma's Alex Cisneros (112), Clovis West's Zach Zimmer (119), Gilroy's Jesse Delgado (125), Selma's Nick Pena (130), Clovis' Alec Dieter (135), Bakersfield's Bryce Hammond (171), Calvary Chapel-Santa Ana's Morgan McIntosh (189) and Saint Francis-Mountain View's Drew Meulman (285) -- are all in the field. Cisneros, Delgado and McIntosh are defending state champions.

Six different weight classes (112, 125, 130, 171, 189 and 285) have the state's top two ranked wrestlers. The 171-pound bracket features the top six, and the 112-pound bracket has the top five wrestlers.
