BOYS BASKETBALL

Jason Carmichael sank four 3-pointers among his 34 points, and Matt Godfrey added 20 points as Mt. Whitney opened the Polly Wilhelmsen Invitational with a 75-60 victory over Tulare Western.

Centennial-Compton knocked top-seeded Clovis East out of the championship bracket at the Modesto Christian Tournament with a 94-91 victory, despite 33 points from Kevin Bailey and 31 points from Robert Sandoval.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Nina Gregory hit four second-half 3-pointers and Erikka Banks scored 20 of her 30 points after halftime as Clovis East overcame a deficit that reached 12 points during a 60-57 victory over Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove in an opening-round game in the Sapphire Division of the West Coast Jamboree in Antioch. In another Jamboree game, Jessica Newman scored 17 points and Rebecca Waller added 16 as Clovis North edged Palo Alto 60-56.

Syndee Fipps combined to score 41 points as Yosemite split two games at the Southern California Holiday Classic, beating Vista Murietta 68-62 and falling to Canyon Springs 54-53.
