Welcome, Coby: Clovis West interim coach Coby Lindsey, in his varsity head coaching debut, will be greeted by arguably the most difficult nonleague schedule in the state. In Liberty-Bakersfield, Servite-Anaheim, Centennial-Corona, Bullard and Edison, he'll confront teams that finished with a combined 47-14 record last year. Further, Centennial finished top-ranked in the state by Cal-Hi Sports at 15-0, Bullard won the County/Metro Athletic Conference title and Liberty shared the Southeast Yosemite League crown.
Welcome, Kelvin: With Josh Banks and Kyle Papendorf, Buchanan projected very well this season in the defensive line. Now add Kelvin Cain, who played basketball for the Bears after transferring to the school from Portland, Ore., in the second semester last winter. "Totally lucky deal," coach Mike Vogt said. "His mother got transferred by the IRS to Fresno and found a place to live in our area. I mean, that's never happened to me, when a guy with this ability fell into my lap. He has a chance to be a highly recruited player."
He said it: "They say you'll have a loss for every sophomore you start. For us, that would mean 10 or 11 losses, but it's not going to happen with this group. These sophomores haven't lost since seventh grade. We're going to survive." -- Madera coach Randy Blankenship
