Local briefs: Clovis man wins 2 golds

Clovis' Don Cheek, 79, won two gold medals at the USATF West Region Masters Track and Field Championships, held last weekend at Soka University in Aliso Viejo.

Returning to competition following a knee operation, Cheek won both the 200- and 400-meter races in his age group, finishing the 200 in 32.21 seconds and the 400 in 1:17.21. He qualified to compete in the 2009 National Senior Games at Stanford in August.

Reservoir to open

Berenda Reservoir will open Saturday following a Monday evening vote by the Chowchilla City Council.

The reservoir will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. There is no admission fee.

Weaver takes tourney

Recent Clovis West High graduate Michael Weaver captured the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior in Rancho Mirage by shooting a 1-over 73 in Thursday's final round. Weaver finished the tournament at 7-under 206.

Weaver hit 45 of 54 greens during his first AJGA event.

"I put myself in good position all week to make some birdies," Weaver said. "Fortunately, I was hitting enough greens that I didn't have to rely on my mediocre chipping."
