Sneak preview: Central Section boys volleyball championship

Today: 7 p.m.

Records: Knights 28-10, Timberwolves 31-4

How they got here: Second-seeded and defending champion Bullard went unbeaten in the County/Metro Athletic Conference; swept Mission Prep, Sunnyside and Buchanan in the playoffs. Top-seeded Clovis East, unbeaten in the Tri-River Athletic Conference, topped Sanger 3-0 and Clovis West 3-2 in the playoffs.

Teacher vs. pupil: Timberwolves coach Daren Torbet played under Bullard coach Roy Verduzco from 1988-90 before assisting him from 1995 to 2007.

T'wolves join the big boys: Last year, Torbet inherited a program that went 1-9 in the TRAC. T'wolves went 4-6 in the TRAC and 18-11 overall in his first season before marching this year into an elite neighborhood owned for 20-plus years in the area by Clovis West, Buchanan, Clovis and Bullard. It's all about recruiting on campus, and Torbet first targeted tall basketball players from coach Tim Amundsen's successful program. "And, fortunately, we have a basketball coach here who pushes his kids to play volleyball," Torbet said. Top middles -- Robbie Nobles and Travis Cooper -- are basketball players who stand 6-4. TRAC MVP Cody Wender and Jeff Evans control the outside with sets from sophomore Alex Moua. "I think the athletes have always been here, it was just a matter of getting a little structure," Torbet said. "And the great thing about winning, it attracts people. Hopefully, this will jumpstart the program to be successful not just this year but every year."
