2009 B'nai B'rith nominees

The 2009 Fresno chapter B'nai B'rith 15 award nominees will be honored May 18 at Pardini's.

The winner of the 58th annual award - based on athletic achievement, academic merit and community involvement - receives a $2,500 scholarship.

Other finalists receive $500, and the student with the highest grade-point average will be presented with the Irving Negin Academic Award. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.

KARINA ALANIS

School: Roosevelt

GPA: 3.0

Sports: soccer, track and field

Overview: A three-year varsity letter-winner in soccer, she was twice named all-league while setting school records for goals in a season and career. She was a second-team All-Bee selection. Also was a two-year letter-winner in track and field, participating on two league champion relay teams. Was on the homecoming football game committee, a member of California for Justice - a students' rights advocacy group - a church volunteer and an election precinct volunteer.

LASASHA ALDREDGE

School: Central

GPA: 3.16

Sports: track and field

Overview: Finishing her third season as a varsity letter-winner. She was named the team's MVP and Most Inspirational athlete as a junior after winning a league title in the 400 meters, then placing fourth in the Central Section in the same event. Was third in the section in the 400 as a sophomore. Also performs with the cheer squad. She won Character Counts honors in Biology and English, and attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law in Washington, D.C. Was a Principal's Academic Letter winner in 2006-07 and Principal's Academic Lamp award winner in 2007-08. Also an Outstanding Achievement Award winner in science.

MICHELLE ANAYA

School: Washington

GPA: 3.33

Sports: volleyball, basketball, track and field

Overview: Two-time team MVP during three seasons as a varsity letter-winner in volleyball. Also a two-time team MVP during three varsity seasons in basketball. Was named defensive player of the year. In track and field, she has won three varsity letters, earning team MVP honors last season. She was a three-time school athlete of the season. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a Multi-Cultural Club member, a part of the Link Crew, Environmental Club and Safe School Ambassadors Club.

NATE DALENA

School: Memorial

GPA: 3.61

Sports: football and baseball

Overview: Two-year varsity letter-winner and all-league selection in football. Was league Most Outstanding Lineman and a second-team All-Bee selection as a senior. Will cap his football career with appearances in the City/County and North/South All-Star games. Was a Scholar Athlete Award winner, Most Improved Award winner and an all-league selection during his three seasons as a varsity letter-winner in baseball. California Scholarship Federation Life member, on the Principal's Honor Roll, a Block M member, part of the Recycling program CSF, and a Poverello House, youth football camp and Kid's Day volunteer.

CHRISTOPHER DOMINGUEZ

School: Clovis

GPA: 3.44

Sports: water polo and swimming

Overview: Played for two Central Section Division I champions during his three seasons as a varsity letter-winner in water polo, earning team Most Inspirational and all-section honors as a senior. Was also a 10th-team All-American. Finishing his third varsity season in swimming, where he earned all-league honors as a junior and sophomore. Also a two-time all-section selection. Swam All-America times last year in the 100 freestyle and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. A member of USA Water Polo Club and the Junior Olympics program. Volunteers with the Special Olympics and at middle school water polo tournaments.

BRENT ETIZ

School: Buchanan

GPA: 4.42

Sports: football and baseball

Overview: Was team captain and the Bear Award recipient to cap his three-year varsity career in football that included two all-league selections. Led team in tackles as a senior on his way to setting the school's career record and winning league defensive player of the year honors. In baseball, was JV Defensive Player of the Year before spending the past two seasons on varsity. He is the class valedictorian, involved in the Buchanan Strength program, a member of the California Blaze baseball team, and volunteers with Marjaree Mason Center, blood drives and breast cancer awareness.

JASON FREEMAN

School: Clovis East

GPA: 4.23

Sports: cross country, basketball, track and field

Overview: Three-year varsity letter-winner in cross country was Character Counts Award winner as a sophomore, Most Improved Runner as a junior and team co-captain and co-Runner of the Year as a senior while earning all-league and all-section honors. Varsity letter-winner while playing on a section championship team as a junior in basketball. Member of two-time defending section team champion while competing in his third varsity season in track and field. Class valedictorian, California Scholarship Federation Life Member, part of the Math team, Symphonic band, Spirit Leadership Class, National Honor Society, Spirit Crew and student government. Principal's Medallion Award winner and an Academic All-Star.

VERONICA GINES

School: Sanger

GPA: 4.04

Sports: volleyball, basketball, track and field

Overview: Was a two-time all-leaguer and Coach's Award winner for three varsity volleyball teams that included one league championship. Two-time all-league pick during three seasons of varsity basketball, earning team MVP honors and all-tournament selections at Selma, Reedley and West Coast tournaments as a senior. Team captain, female MVP and all-league pick last season in track and field, the second of her three varsity seasons. School record holder in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Member of the California Scholarship Federation, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and student government, Scholar Athlete Award winner and part of the Interact and Armenian clubs.

KELSEY KLATT

School: Sunnyside

GPA: 4.03

Sports: water polo and swimming

Overview: Three-time Scholar Athlete Award winner, all-league selection, league MVP and all-section pick during her three seasons of varsity water polo. Bee All-Star was also a Jim Coiner Sportsmanship Award winner. In swimming, the three-time varsity letter-winner qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials. Twice named team and league MVP and was a Bee All-Star last season. Section champion in 100 butterfly as a sophomore and 200 freestyle as a junior. Member of the honor roll, school leadership, Link Crew, Stand up for Excellence and Human Relations Council. USB Senator who's also involved with Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots and Skyler's Stocking.

CORY LYNCH

School: McLane

GPA: 3.95

Sports: football, baseball

Overview: Scholar Athlete Award winner and team captain for the JV football team as a junior. Varsity letter-winner as a senior, earning another Scholar Athlete Award. Two-time varsity baseball letter-winner and part of a section championship team as a junior. Scholar Athlete Award winner and Tri-Athlete Award winner as a junior. Part of the honor roll and a member of the Breaking Down the Walls and Exchange Club Youth of the Month organizations. Foster children mentor and clothing drive and foster youth event volunteer. Also a student tutor and active in blood drives.

T.J. McDONALD

School: Edison

GPA: 3.28

Sports: football, basketball, baseball

Overview: Three-year varsity letter-winner was team co-MVP twice and twice an all-league pick in football. League Defensive Player of the Year, a Bee All-Star and a member of the U.S. Army All-Star and Super Prep Dream teams. Ranked the No. 2 safety in ESPN's top 150. Two-time varsity letter-winner in basketball, earning team Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading Tigers to section title as a junior. In second year of varsity baseball. Was all-league as a junior. Headed Nutritional Vending Machine drive, attended Black Business Leaders conference, and was a Christmas food drive, Marjaree Mason and youth football camp volunteer.

MIKAYLA PIERCE

School: Clovis West

GPA: 3.63

Sports: volleyball

Overview: Three-year varsity letter-winner. Was The Bee's Player of the Year after leading team to a section Division I title as a senior team captain. Also earned league Player of the Year honors. A California Scholastic Federation Life Member, National Honor Society member, a Bee Academic All-Star and a Scholar Athlete Award winner. She's on prom and winter formal committees and a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club fashion show, Human Relations Day, Kids Day, Make A Wish, food drive, Light the Night for Leukemia and Children's Hospital fundraiser. Member of the Eagles of Honor, School Site Council and CUSD Inter-School Council.

ZACH ROSS

School: Hoover

GPA: 3.79

Sports: basketball, volleyball

Overview: Capped three-year varsity basketball career with Coach's and Scholar Athlete awards while being named second-team all-league. In volleyball, was a three-year varsity letter-winner. Was a Scholar Athlete and team MVP as a junior and league captain and all-league as a senior. He's on the honor roll and has received Achievement in Business Award, the CART Excellence in Engineering Award and the MESA Award. A Fellowship of Christian Athletes member, Special Olympics volunteer and a youth basketball coach and camp volunteer. Does church mission work, is part of the church choir and volunteers with the Food Bank and Rescue Mission.

JESSICA WILLIAMS

School: Bullard

GPA: 3.43

Sports: volleyball, track and field

Overview: Earned team MVP honors and was selected all-league and all-tournament at the Highland Invitational to cap third season of varsity volleyball. Was twice team co-captain. Also a three-time letter-winner in track and field, where she was a state meet qualifier as a sophomore and a junior. She has been a team captain and an all-league selection. She's the student body president, a member of honor roll and part of Leadership Club, Link Crew, Character Counts and Human Relations Committee. Is an assistant coach for middle school track and field and volleyball. Involved with Toys for Tots and Forensics Tournament.

SPENSER WRIGHT

School: Fresno

GPA: 4.20

Sports: cross country, track and field, lacrosse

Overview: Three-time team captain, team MVP, Coach's Award winner and Pursuing Victory with Honor Award winner as a three-time letter-winner in cross country. Varsity letter-winner in track and field as a sophomore and in lacrosse as a senior. Class valedictorian, and in the International Baccalaureate program and on the Mock Trial and Senate Club. California Scholastic Federation and Junior ROTC. A Youth Court juror and member of the CAS Club, Hooks and Needles Club and Conversation Club. Volunteer for Kid's Day parade, food bank, historical home tour, Hinds Hospice and presidential candidate campaign. Volunteered at orphanage in Ecuador, 2008 polling officer and member of school rifle team.
