Only once in the 35 years since the CIF State Track and Field Championships joined boys and girls has the Central Section been represented on the medal stand (top six) in the sprints by both genders. That occurred in 1974 - the first year the meet included girls competition - when West Bakersfield's Joel Andrews placed third in the 100-yard dash and Bakersfield's Louise McCaleb earned thirds in the 100 and 220.
The picture has brightened:
200 meters: Central's Brendon Bigelow ranks fifth in the state (21.63) after placing second as a freshman in 2008. Top-ranked is Mission Hills-San Marcos' Joe Cooks (21.30).
100/200: Clovis sophomore Jenna Prandini is fifth in the state in the 100 (11.94) and fourth in the 200 (24.68). Watch for Pinole Valley's Strangenae Campbell (No. 1 100, 11.74) and St. Elizabeth-Oakland's Ashton Purvis (No. 2 100, 11.78; No. 1 200, 23.86).
