He'd taken shots in the match and missed. Five times, to be exact. But when Bullard High needed him most, senior captain Paul Islas came through.
Islas scored the game-winner with 12 seconds left in a 2-1 victory against Valencia-Placentia on Tuesday night at Chukchansi Park in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Division I boys soccer game to send the second-seeded Knights into today's semifinals. Bullard will host No. 3 Torrey Pines at 5 p.m. at Chukchansi Park.
Bullard takes a 22-3-2 record and 20-game unbeaten streak into the match. The Knights are County/Metro Athletic Conference and Central Section Division I champions.
Torrey Pines (19-3-4), a San Diego Section team, finished third in the Avocado League at 6-2-2. The Falcons are 19-3-4 overall. Torrey Pines beat No. 6 Great Oak-Temecula 4-3 on Tuesday in a regional opener.

- Third-seeded Buchanan will play at 5 p.m. today in a Division I girls semifinal against No. 2 Westview-San Diego.
The Bears (26-3-1) overcame a sluggish start to edge No. 6 Saugus 3-2 on Tuesday at Fresno's Tice Park in a regional opener. Buchanan finished second to Clovis in the Tri-River Athletic Conference and won its fourth straight Central Section Division I title this season.
"Each game our goal is to advance," Buchanan head coach Erik Farfan said. "We'll go as far as we can go.
"We just need to start better than we did Tuesday. We need to put in a complete game, and if we do that I think our chances will be good."
Westview (24-2-4) beat No. 7 Sultana on penalty kicks Tuesday in a regional opener. The San Diego Section Wolverines finished atop the Valley League at 11-0-1.
- No. 4 Parlier will take on top-seeded Salesian-Los Angeles at 5 p.m. today in a D-III boys semifinal.
Parlier (27-3) beat No. 5 Tranquillity 2-1 Tuesday in a regional opener. Parlier won the Central Section D-V title this season. Tranquillity was the Central Section D-IV champ.
Salesian (23-2-3) blanked No. 8 Avalon 4-0 in a regional opener Tuesday. The Mustangs, who play in the Southern Section, won the Santa Fe League with a 6-0-0 record.
