Fatal big rig crash closes Highway 99 lanes in Fresno

Update, 4:30 p.m.: All the lanes have been reopened, the CHP announced on its website.

The California Highway Patrol closed the northbound lanes of Highway 99 at Chestnut Avenue for several hours Sunday morning to investigate a fatal traffic accident involving a big rig.

A big rig struck the Chestnut Avenue overpass, south of Malaga, around 8:15 a.m. and then caught fire underneath the overpass before the fire spread to the bridge, the CHP said. The driver was killed in the crash. No information about the driver was immediately available.

A vehicle then hit the big rig from behind.

The CHP reopened the left lane just before 11:30 a.m., but the other two lanes remain closed for cleanup. Traffic to the Chestnut Avenue bridge has also been redirected to Central Avenue.

Motorists should be aware that traffic along Highway 99 north has slowed and is backed up at least three miles to Clovis Avenue.
