Fresno County Library bookshelf: Moreno memoir, 'Hobbit' DVD arrive

The Fresno County Library's Bookshelf column shares suggestions for books, music and other items and provides information about library programs.

New arrivals

"Rita Moreno (A Memoir)" by Rita Moreno: The Puerto Rican actress, dancer and singer looks back on her life and career, from coming to New York at age 5 to winning an Academy Award for her role in "West Side Story" to efforts to prevent typecasting.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (DVD): The new classic Middle Earth trilogy begins 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings." Gandalf sweeps Bilbo Baggins into a mission to regain the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Bilbo and a company of 13 dwarves meet adventures and danger. Bilbo becomes the owner of the "One Ring."

"Written in Red: A Novel of the Others" by Anne Bishop: The first entry in a thrilling new fantasy series from the New York Times bestselling author of "The Black Jewels Trilogy." Readers can enter a world occupied by the Others, supernatural creatures, including vampires and shape shifters, which control the Earth and prey on humans.

"Zero Dark Thirty" (DVD): This acclaimed movie recounts the 10-year search for Osama bin Laden and his death at the hands of Navy SEALs.

New CDs include: "The Next Day" by David Bowie, "Night Visions (Deluxe Edition)" by Imagine Dragons, "Now That's What I Call Music 45" by various artists, including Phillip Phillips and One Direction, and "Spring Break ... Here to Party" by Luke Bryan.

"The Forgotten" by David Baldacci: When he receives a posthumous letter from his aunt suggesting that things are terribly wrong in her Florida Gulf Coast town, Army Special Agent John Puller discovers a surprising conspiracy.

"Seven Psychopaths" (DVD): A struggling scriptwriter who becomes entwined in the L.A. criminal world after his eccentric friends abduct a mobster's treasured Shih Tzu.

"Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife" by Eben Alexander: A Harvard-educated neurosurgeon describes his dramatic near-death experience during a weeklong coma. Alexander describes his methodical study of near-death occurrences while explaining what he discovered about the nature of human consciousness.

"Taken 2" (DVD): Liam Neeson is back as Bryan Mills, the ex-CIA operative who did not let anything prevent him from rescuing his daughter from merciless abductors. When the father of one of the kidnappers vows revenge, Bryan and his wife are taken hostage. In order to stay alive, he recruits the aid of an improbable confederate and destroys his heavily armed enemies one at a time.
