Buchanan High buildings evacuated

A suspicious device that appeared to be a pipe bomb -- but later was found not to be an explosive -- forced the evacuation of two buildings at Buchanan High School on Wednesday morning, Clovis police said.

A staff member discovered the object on a lawn about 7:45 a.m. Precautions were taken for the safety of students and staff, police said.

Students and teachers later returned to the evacuated buildings.

Police said the object was a piece of exercise equipment from an exercise class that meets on campus outside of school hours, Clovis Unified spokeswoman Kelly Avants said.

The school evacuated Building 100 and the library. Teague Avenue was closed temporarily between Minnewawa and Peach avenues, Avants said.
