Marinello Schools of Beauty has opened its first cosmetology school in Fresno.
It is the Whittier-based company's 48th location and opened last week at 3117 W. Shaw Ave., the southwest corner of Shaw and Marks avenues.
The school, www.marinello.com, trains students to get their cosmetology license in 10 months. Students learn skills in hair, nail and skin care.
The license allows students to work in salons or spas, or own their own businesses, said admissions adviser Brittnee Gilles.
The 10,528-square-foot school features 139 hair, manicure and pedicure stations.
"We're actually one of the larger schools," Gilles said. "They anticipated a large demand in this area."
The school also includes career services and trains students on resume preparation and interview skills.
Sinbad's Closet, a consignment shop selling new and used clothing, opened last month in Clovis.
The shop, at 110 W. Shaw Ave., Suite 101, is next to Ross Dress for Less.
Owner Cindy Dunn sells clothes for the entire family -- including a few outfits for dogs -- but the store's target market is women 15 to 40 years old.
Dunn was inspired to open the store after a job helping people find employment. She discovered many job-seekers didn't have the appropriate clothes to go on job interviews.
She said she opened Sinbad's Closet as an affordable way to help fill that need. The store also sells items that can be hard to find, including long pants for juniors and women's sizes up to 5X.
The store will sell local art and participate in Art Hop. Dunn is a former executive director of the Fresno Arts Council.
She also plans to sublet part of the shop to another business that will give voice and piano lessons.
Dunn's Fashion Design Incubator, a nonprofit that trains high school and college students for the fashion industry, also will operate out of the store.
Brandon Eachus of Fresno combined his interest in clothing design, business and the Internet to launch a virtual fashion marketplace called WoogieWoo.com.
It's a low-cost way for designers to sell their items, Eachus said.
Designers are charged as little as 10 cents for each item posted.
Eachus and two partners run the business. He also brings in students from local colleges and universities to help out.
The website has more than 100 designers in seven countries selling women's, men's and children's clothing, vintage purses, beachwear and accessories.
