Word on the Street: Ford techs open repair shop

When Freedom Ford technicians Tim Kronyak and Sam Pfeifer thought they might be laid off, they made plans to open their own business.

The pink slips came this month and days later, the two were up and running with their own diesel-truck repair business, Sims Power Technology in Clovis.

Kronyak spent 13 years as a technician at Freedom Ford, Pfeifer spent 11. The dealership is slated to close at the end of the month due to declining sales and Ford's efforts to consolidate dealerships.

Kronyak and Pfeifer are now working on all types of Ford engines at their shop. They work on the same type of trucks they used to -- including the ones they specialized in at the dealership, like trucks used for towing, construction and telecommunications. They offer lower prices than the dealership work.

They also work on smaller trucks like the Ford Ranger.

"Everything just fell into place," Kronyak said.

Beauty beat

A Fresno hairstylist has created a magazine to promote local beauty businesses while providing people with a resource to find these services.

Local Beauty Insider launched Feb. 10 with stories about hair and makeup trends, a children's clothing store and organic beauty salons and products.

"It's pretty much like a feel-good magazine," said publisher Brandy Venturi, a hairstylist at Red Ruby Salon in Fresno. "Whatever makes you feel good you'll find it in there."

The free magazine will be published every two months and distributed in businesses around town. Venturi plans to sell the magazine in the future in bookstores like Barnes & Noble.

Celebrating a century

Brott Mechanical Inc. of Tulare is celebrating 100 years in business.

Founded in Burlington, Kan., in 1910 by E.E. Brott, the company moved out West in 1935. Over the years, it evolved from a tin and plumbing shop into one specializing in servicing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. It also designs and builds those types of projects.

"It's rewarding to look back at a century of business and see how we've evolved to continually meet the needs of our customers," said Garth Brott, company president.

The company's focus and commitment to its customers has served it well. It posted an 8% increase in revenue from 2009 to 2010.

"People know us for our quality of service, our workmanship and our willingness to stand behind our work," said Dax Brott, who represents the fourth generation of the family to be involved in the business and is the company's general manager.
