A Salinas Valley State Prison inmate has pleaded guilty to strangling a fellow inmate.
A Monterey County judge sentenced 59-year-old Clyde Beaver -- who was serving time for a 1978 murder in Tulare County -- to life in prison without parole after he entered his plea to murder charges Thursday.
Deputy District Attorney Chuck Olvis said Beaver killed his cellmate in April 2010.
Firewood season will begin Friday
Firewood cutting and gathering season in the Sierra National Forest starts Friday.
Only people with woodcutting permits will be allowed to cut and gather firewood for personal use only. Permits for are $10 per cord and will be available Friday at Forest Service Offices in Clovis, Prather, North Fork, Oakhurst and Mariposa.

Lao New Year set April 16-17
The Lao Community Cultural Center of Fresno will host the annual Lao New Year on April 16-17 in southwest Fresno.
The opening ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Dhamma Sacca Temple at 2710 S. Fruit Ave. The event will feature cultural exhibits, traditional performances and a New Year princess parade.

Education Luncheon sponsors sought
The Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking sponsors for the State of Education Luncheon on April 6 from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The event marks the centennial anniversary of California State University and will feature remarks by Fresno State president John Welty.
The luncheon will be at TorNinos, 2080 N. Blackstone Ave.
Member prices are $40 each or $400 for a table of 10 and non-member prices are $55 each or $550 for a table.

Events set for March of Dimes fundraisers
Four March of Dimes events to raise money for prenatal programs and research are planned in the Valley next month.
The March for Babies events will be April 9 in Corcoran at Christmas Tree Park, April 16 in Fresno at Woodward Park, and April 30 in Hanford at Hanford West High School and in Visalia at Cigna.
Registration for each event starts at 8 a.m.
