Valley fire officials receive awards

Two Central Valley fire officials were recipients of year-end awards from the Central Valley Fire Chiefs Association on Friday evening.

Hume Lake Volunteer Fire Chief Jim Huffman was named 2010 Chief Officer of the Year by the Association, Clovis Fire Battalion Chief Steve Henry said.

Huffman was one of the founding members of the Hume Lake Volunteer Fire Department in 2004, Henry said. Following the opening of the Hume Lake Fire Department, Huffman was named as the inaugural fire chief.

Also, Tulare County Fire Lt. Jared Smith was named 2010 Firefighter of the Year after saving a trapped elderly woman during a structure fire, Henry said.

Both were given their awards Friday at the Manhattan Steakhouse during the installation of new officers for the Fire Chiefs Association, Henry said.
