No charges in crash that led to severed leg

No charges will be filed against a motorcyclist who struck a woman as she crossed a street to pick up mail in a horrific accident north of Clovis last month, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

The motorcyclist, Shane Speake, 22, told CHP officers he was driving home at 30 mph about 7 p.m. Oct. 16 and did not see the woman crossing the road on the 11400 block of Armstrong Avenue.

The injured woman, Joan Palmieri, 61, had her leg amputated below the knee, said her husband, Ron Palmieri. She also had a split pelvis, a serious cut to her forehead and part of her lip had to be sewn together, he said.

Joan Palmieri teaches second grade at Lowell Elementary School in Fresno.
