Eleven Valley fire agencies sent a total of 15 fire engines and 63 firefighters to fight the Canyon fire in the Lower Kern River Canyon area of the southern Sequoia National Forest, which has grown to 6,000 acres.
Help came from California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Fresno, Madera, Tulare and Kings county fire departments and city fire departments of Fresno, Clovis, Merced, Los Banos, Bakersfield and Porterville.
The U.S. Forest Service is projecting full containment of the fire on Friday.

Gang member sentenced in death
A 20-year-old gang member was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole in the shooting death of a teenager while he played basketball, the Tulare County District Attorney's Office said.
Fidel Rosales of Farmersville shot Xavier Feliscian, 18, north of Visalia in July 2006. Rosales was the gunman in the drive-by shooting of suspected gang members, the District Attorney's Office said.
25-year sentence for attack on teen
A 22-year-old Seville man was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison for attempted murder when he wounded a teenager earlier this year, the Tulare County District Attorney's Office said.
Mark Sanjuan had pleaded no contest to the shooting in Cutler in March. The victim was shot in the abdomen and released from a hospital a few days later.
Woman to go to jail for welfare fraud
A Farmersville woman was sentenced Wednesday to four months in jail after pleading no contest to welfare fraud, the Tulare County District Attorney's Office said.
Karen Maria Darlene Miller, 22, also received five years of probation for fraudulently accepting money and food stamps.
2 new WIC sites
Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission's Women, Infants & Children program is opening two new sites in Fresno, officials said.
The program will hold a grand opening from 9 to 11 a.m. today at 1426 W. Ashlan Ave. and 4995 E. Kings Canyon Road.
