Clovis West girls sports named No. 1 in state

Following a school year that saw Clovis West High capture six Central Section girls championships, the Golden Eagles were named the state's Girls Sports Program of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports on Tuesday.

Clovis West earned the nod over Archbishop Mitty-San Jose, which won five titles in the Central Coast Section and has been the top girls sports school for the prior 15 years.

The Golden Eagles are the Central Section's first school to land on top of the list for girls sports since Clovis in 1996-97.

"This honor is a tribute to our student-athletes, coaches and community for a lot of hard work," athletic director Joe Aiello said.

Clovis West's basketball team reached the Southern California Regional Division I final; girls golf placed sixth at the SoCal finals; and the swimming and diving team won its 14th straight section title while producing three All-Americans.

The Golden Eagles girls also won section titles in volleyball, water polo and track and field.

Junipero Serra-Gardena, with state titles in football and boys basketball, was named the top school overall by Cal-Hi Sports. Buchanan earned Special Mention after winning eight section titles and edging Clovis West 137-136 for the Tri-River Athletic Conference Supremacy Award.

The Bears won section titles in baseball, boys and girls cross country, girls tennis, boys water polo, girls soccer, badminton and boys track and field.
