Word on the Street: Sister act brews business

Sisters Susan Flores and Heidi Breshears had been talking for years about opening their own business. So when the opportunity came up to take over their favorite cafe, they jumped at the chance.

Flores and Breshears took over Planet Java at 2225 W. Shaw Ave., near Van Ness Boulevard, and renamed it Central Java. They also operate a drive-through coffee shop at 7280 N. Remington Ave., near Palm and Herndon avenues.

The sisters like the neighborhood cafe feel, and want to build on that with new menu items such as breakfast burritos, pastry items, a steak sandwich and side salads, including their grandmother's German potato salad.

Although the sisters know they face competition from other cafes, they plan to pay close attention to their customers needs, such as adding a children's menu, Wi-Fi, water for pets and sidewalk chalk for children.

"We want to really get to know our customers and give them what they want," Flores said.

GB3 pumps it up

A little more than a year after it opened, the Sunnyside GB3 is expanding.

The gym, at Kings Canyon Road and Fowler Avenue in Fresno, is adding 7,000 square feet from a building next door, bringing the total space to 37,000 square feet, said owner George Brown. The two buildings will be connected with a hallway. The gym opened in March 2009.

"We've been increasing a huge amount every month," Brown said of membership. "Usually you don't like to take a brand-new club and add on to it this soon, but we had no choice."

The new space will house a free-weight area and possibly rooms for aerobics or spinning. The addition should be finished in 60 to 90 days, he said.

Skin care trio

Three aestheticians have banded together to form The Skin Care Center.

Madison Mohrr, Katherine Maxwell and Cara Monroe each run their own business out of the site, offering several types of facials, and waxing for the face and body. One woman offers spray tans and another offers makeup for weddings and photo sessions.

"It evolved," said Mohrr. "We all went into salons and hated it, the smells and everything else. We didn't feel it was good for our clients."

The new location is in the Willow Professional Center at 875 Ashlan Ave., on the northwest corner of Ashlan and Willow avenues in Clovis. It joins Body del Sol and other spas and salons that offer skin care.
