Rising country star Jake Owen gallops into town April 23 for the Clovis Rodeo's headlining concert.
Owen is known for hit songs such as "Eight Second Ride" and "Don't Think I Can't Love You." He's also in the middle of tour dates with Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert and Sugarland.
We caught up with Owen by phone from Boise, Idaho, where he was doing some pre-show clothes shopping.
Question: What do you look for when buying clothes?
Answer: I don't know. I just look for anything that seems to fit me, my personality and who I am.
You're playing the Clovis Rodeo here. If you were in the rodeo, what would you do?
I'd probably be a bull rider. I'm a fan of bull riding, but I have to admit I don't have the cojones to get on the back of those of suckers. I'd rather watch those guys.
I know you're opening for some big names this spring, Sugarland, Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert. But who is it your dream to open for?
I've been pretty fortunate, I've opened up for a lot of people, I'm proud to say. Everybody from Kenny Chesney to Brooks & Dunn to Alan Jackson. It would never happen, but I'd love to play with Tom Petty. I'm from Florida, and Tom Petty is a big deal. Maybe if Alabama goes back out on tour, they'd have me out.
How did a guy from a beach town in Florida get into playing country music?
I grew up in a great family. I had a lot of people to keep me real about who I am and what I do. And that's what I think country music is about. It doesn't matter where you're from or where you are, it's the same old stripes and the same ol' stars. America is America, and I believe that's what country music is all about, whether it's our boys and girls overseas, or our friends who sit at the bar and have a cold one on a Friday.
You recently started a fitness challenge with fans on your Web site. What inspired that?
Just making people better. It also helps me make myself better. I've challenged others to do so, so I have to do it myself.
You've had both a No. 2 single and album - what are you gonna do when you get a No. 1?
Probably smile for a really long time and think about how much I've done to get that. "Don't Think I Can't Love You" was right there on the edge of going No. 1. It was almost there. That just means I got to work harder, you know. It'll all come hopefully.
What's your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I'm a water guy. I like to get out on my boat and take in the sunshine. Something about it really makes me calm.
What's the most surprising thing on your iPod?
I think people would be surprised to see what's on my iPod. Everything from old-school country to modern hip-hop to rock 'n' roll. There's everybody from Lionel Richie to Led Zeppelin to Jay-Z.
When should people expect a new album from you?
I'm getting ready to work on it in the next coming months. I would say first part of 2011.
