Fresno Co. student scientists compete

Fresno County's contingent of student scientists who will compete at the California State Science Fair in May will include some second-place winners in last week's 57th annual Central California Regional Science, Mathematics and Engineering Fair.

They will join students who placed first, who also are advancing to the state science fair, to be held May 17 and 18 in Los Angeles.

Second-place finishers heading to the state fair:

Animal science: Paige Simons, grade 8, Quail Lake Environmental Charter School, Sanger Unified School District.

Behavioral and social science: Patrick Manghera, grade 6, Gettysburg Elementary, Clovis Unified School District.

Biochemistry: Tatiana Trejo, grade 7, Sanger Academy Charter School, Sanger Unified School District.

Chemistry: Morgan Case, grade 8, Washington Academic Middle School, Sanger Unified School District.

Earth and space science: Matthew Estrada, grade 8, Sanger Academy Charter School, Sanger Unified School District.

Engineering: Thomas Wood, grade 6, Fairmont Elementary, Sanger Unified School District; Joanie Kalmbach, grade 8, Alta Sierra Intermediate School, Clovis Unified School District.
