Local briefs: Different man sought in attempted murder

New information in the search for a man wanted for attempted murder in Madera County reveals that he is not responsible for trying to run over a deputy Thursday, authorities said.

Madera County deputies learned Saturday that the man who tried to run over a deputy was not Donald "Donny" Austin, but an associate of his, Eric Cyrus Henderson, 44, of Madera.

However, Austin, who is suspected of intentionally hitting a go-cart head-on in a March 17 incident, remains on the loose. Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff's Department at (559) 675-7770 or (800) 560-4911, or CrimeStoppers at (559) 498-STOP.

Tulare market burglarized

Preet Market in Tulare was burglarized Saturday morning, suffering $27,000 in loss and damages.

The Tulare County Sheriff's Department found that an unknown number of suspects stole items. Deputies then found several items and returned them to the victim, officials said.

Woman critical after being hit by a van

A 41-year-old woman was in critical condition Saturday after she was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Fresno and Klette streets in southwest Fresno.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer said the woman had a broken leg, pelvis and internal bleeding. She was struck by a van about 9:30 p.m. Friday. Dyer said the driver of the van parked it at a nearby residence and fled.

The van has been seized by police and the suspect has been identified.

5 arrested on DUI

Five people were arrested on suspicion of DUI at a police sobriety checkpoint Friday at Clovis and Grant avenues in southeast Fresno.

Thirty-eight vehicles also were impounded as a result of the driver being unlicensed or arrested on DUI.

2 held in stabbing

Two juvenile Bulldog gang members were arrested after stabbing a 17-year-old in southeast Fresno on Friday night, police said.

Around 10:30 p.m., police responded to a stabbing at Cedar Avenue and Huntington Boulevard. The 17-year-old victim and two friends told officers they were approached by two males who asked to use a cell phone.

A few moments later, the victim and his friends attempted to run from the males, who began to chase them.

One male caught the 17-year-old and stabbed him in the face, causing injuries that were severe but not life-threatening. The suspects were taken into custody without incident and a weapon was recovered. They were booked into Fresno County Juvenile Hall on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an illegal weapon.

Road work

Lane on Shaw closed

The eastbound lane on Shaw Avenue at Golden State Boulevard will be closed Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The closure is due to an underground utility project.

Storm drain work set

The Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District will be installing storm drains in several locations around Fresno, which will require immediate lane closures.

The current locations are: southbound lanes of Blackstone Avenue between Olive and Belmont avenues; east and westbound lanes of Ventura Avenue between B and C streets; westbound lanes of Belmont between Blackstone and Fulton Avenue.

The closures are expected to last about four weeks.

Cole Ave. to close

Cole Avenue between Audubon and Millbrook avenues in northeast Fresno will be closed Monday through April 5.

Public Works street maintenance workers will be milling and overlaying the travel lanes on Cole Avenue and also at the intersection of Cole and Audubon avenues. Work will be done Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
