Local briefs: Vehicle stolen from Porterville dealership

The Tulare County Sheriff's Department recovered a vehicle stolen Wednesday from a Porterville dealership and arrested the man suspected in the theft.

Porterville police responded to a call about 7 p.m. about an auto theft from Faggart Buick dealership on South Main Street, officials said.

Deputies stopped the vehicle moments later. The vehicle was recovered and returned.

The driver was arrested and taken to Tulare County Jail, officials said.

Visalia police issue Haiti fraud warning

The Visalia Police Department is warning the public about bogus phone solicitation calls claiming to raise money for relief in Haiti.

Visalia police received one report that a caller claimed to work for the Visalia Police Department.

Sgt. Steve Phillips advised anyone wanting to donate to verify the legitimacy of the nonprofit group.


Man gets prison term in girlfriend shooting

A Chowchilla man was sentenced Thursday in Madera County Superior Court to 34 years to life for trying to kill his girlfriend.

Juan Carlos Guardardo, 29, was arrested by Chowchilla police Aug. 4 after shooting his girlfriend, also from Chowchilla, during an argument on A Street.

The woman identified Guardardo as the person who shot her.

He was convicted of attempted murder after a one-week trial last month, said Madera County District Attorney Michael Keitz.

Man pleads guilty to Fresno man's murder

A Reno, Nev., man pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder in the death of a 22-year-old Fresno man.

Quincy Ray Solomon Julian bludgeoned Donnie Kellison to death in August 2008 at a motel in Reno. Police said Julian beat Kellison with a rifle that belonged to another man because he wanted to sell it for drug money.

Hwy. 41 ramps close

The Highway 41 connector ramps from southbound 41 to southbound Highway 99 and from northbound 99 to northbound 41 will be closed overnight Wednesday through Jan. 22 for repairs and bridge expansion.

Signs will notify motorists of the closures, which run from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

To access southbound 99 from 41, drivers can exit at the westbound Highway 180 exit and proceed to 99. To access northbound 41 from northbound 99, drivers can exit at the eastbound 180 exit and proceed to 41.

MLK celebration set

Fresno's annual celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will kick off today with the opening garlanding ceremony and an award reception.

This year's celebration, presented by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Committee of Fresno, includes events through Thursday. Attendees are asked to donate food at each event to support local families.

The garlanding ceremony will start at noon at the Fresno County Courthouse Park. A reception to honor community service will be at the African American Museum at 1857 Fulton Ave. from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
