Clovis man who left kids at crash gets prison term

A Clovis man was sentenced Tuesday to four years in prison in connection with a traffic crash from which he ran away, leaving three children inside the SUV.

Richard James Riley, 34, faced as many as nine years in prison, but Judge Jonathan Conklin agreed to a lesser prison term because he said Riley accepted responsibility for his actions. On May 26, Riley pleaded no contest in Fresno County Superior Court to felony drunken driving and child endangerment.

Clovis police say Riley picked up three children from the Red Bank Elementary School carnival and drove away in a Toyota 4-Runner shortly before 9 p.m. May 8. Minutes later, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed on a neighborhood street, causing the Toyota to roll on its side, police said.

Riley left the children in the wrecked SUV but was captured a short time later, police said.
