A 26-year-old man died Monday night in a canal near Sanger.
The man, who was identified Tuesday as Cody Merk, 26, of Sanger, was swimming in the canal around 6 p.m. with two younger family members when he became caught in the canal, Fresno County Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Hayes said. The man may have hit his head and sank face-first, Hayes said.
Deputies pulled the man from the canal on the 1700 block of East McKinley Avenue, north of Belmont and North Viau avenues. They performed CPR on the victim until he was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center, Hayes said.
The man was pronounced dead around 8 p.m.
