A pedestrian in his 60s was killed Monday morning while trying to beat an Amtrak train across Princeton Avenue at Maroa Avenue in central Fresno, police reported.

The incident occurred at 9:52 a.m. as the man, who was walking with a cane, was northbound on Maroa as the southbound train approached. Lt. Joe Gomez said the train operator saw the man and sounded the train’s horn repeatedly. The man tried to hurry across the tracks, Gomez said, but was hit by the train and died instantly.

The man was not immediately identified.
