A suspicious fire destroyed two detached garages Thursday morning in southwest Fresno.
The blaze was reported shortly after 9 a.m. in the 300 block of West Hawes Avenue. A fire spokesman said police have been called repeatedly to one of the garages, where several people have broken in and set up living quarters in recent weeks.
The fire started in one of the garages and spread quickly to the second. Both structures were total losses.
The cost of the damage was being assessed and the cause was under investigation.
Firefighters turned their hoses on themselves to keep cool while knocking down the flames.
