Fresno gang member arrested in officer-involved shooting

Fresno police fired several rounds at a suspect they say was wielding a gun in southeast Fresno on Friday night.

The suspect, Daniel Telles, 27, is “very familiar” to local law enforcement, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

Dyer said Telles is a Bulldog gang member and travels with a motorcycle gang called Malos Hechos.

Around 5:15 p.m., a call came in about an armed man walking through a neighborhood near Maple and White avenues.

Minutes later, a second call came from Maple and Illinois avenues. Two people were in a car, and the suspect crossed in front of the vehicle and pointed a handgun at the occupants, Dyer said.

Plainclothes officers wearing tactical vests confronted the suspect at Maple and Inyo avenues. They told the man several times to drop his weapon; when he didn’t, an officer fired four to five rounds at the suspect, Dyer said.

He wasn’t hit.

The suspect ran south on Maple Avenue and was confronted by officers in uniform.

He threw his gun into the gutter, Dyer said, and officers took him into custody.

The gun appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun that was jammed and the slide was back – indicating it had been fired at some point, Dyer said.

No one was injured.

Telles will be booked into Fresno County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and felony brandishing of a firearm in the presence of an officer, Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez said.

This is the third officer-involved shooting for Fresno police this year, Gomez said. At this time last year, the department had no such shootings.

Maple Avenue is closed from Kings Canyon Road to Hamilton Avenue while police investigate but is expected to reopen by 9:15 p.m., Gomez said.
