Crash closes northbound 99 in Madera County for about two hours

Northbound lanes of Highway 99 in Madera County were shut down for about two hours early Monday after a crash involving a big rig and a pickup towing a trailer, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash occurred about 12:40 a.m. after a Freightliner driven by Sohan Lal, 62, of Pittsburg entered the northbound offramp while driving south. When he realized that he was going the wrong way, Lal tried to turn around north of Avenue 8.

The CHP said Ricardo Gonzalez, 48, of Madera was northbound on 99 and was unable to avoid colliding with the big rig. The trailer overturned in the crash. Gonzalez sustained cuts and bruises in the crash.

ABC30 reported that CHP officers, firefighters and good Samaritans were able to rescue a horse that was briefly trapped inside the trailer.
