A portion of Highway 99 in Fresno will be closed at night for about two weeks beginning next week.

Starting Monday, Highway 99 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. due to bridge construction of Veterans Boulevard in northwest Fresno.

Construction, which will take place along Highway 99 in the area north of the Shaw Avenue exit and south of the Herndon Avenue exit, is expected to last approximately two weeks.

Traffic will divert to new on- and off-ramps near the closure.

As part of the nighttime construction, a wooden bridge form will be built over Highway 99 and filled with reinforced concrete, then the wooden forms will be removed.

The bridge at Veterans Boulevard is expected to help residents and commuters connect from west of Highway 99 to the east while easing traffic congestion on Shaw and Herndon avenues.

In September, a new overpass that’s part of the broader Veterans Boulevard project opened to provide a safer way for drivers to cross the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to reach Golden State Boulevard.

The full opening of Veterans Boulevard from Shaw to Herndon avenues, including all on- and off-ramps connected to Highway 99, is scheduled for November 2023.

Nighttime commuters should expect delays during the highway’s closure.
