A 57-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon on rural Highway 180 west of Fresno, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. off North Blythe Avenue as a truck was heading east, Sgt. Dave Salcido said. The driver of the truck drifted onto the shoulder of the roadway while asleep at the wheel. When he awoke, he overturned the truck.
His passenger, an electrician for a private electrical company whose identity has not been released, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries but refused hospital treatment, Salcido said.
No other vehicles were involved, and drugs or alcohol do not appear to factor in the accident, Salcido said.
The CHP is continuing its investigation.
