Young readers in Valley give away 9,000 books

Two community organizations, Reading Heart and Fresno City Waste Management, collected more than 9,000 books this last month in donations for Valley Children’s Hospital and other local charities.

Eight-year-old Danay Ferguson, who founded Reading Heart, said that her goal was to put books in the hands of every patient at the hospital. On Monday, Danay delivered 4,000 books to Valley Children’s, helping each patient choose a book from her specially designed reading cart.

Waste management also teamed up with students from local elementary schools at the Waste Management Books for Buddies Drive, which promoted literacy efforts throughout the central San Joaquin Valley. The drive was held in March and collected over 5,000 books, which will be donated to local charities.
