A 28-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon in Visalia after he was struck from behind by another motorcycle while trying to get out of his tumbled bike.

Visalia police said the accident happened about 4:40 p.m. on Plaza Drive near the entrance to westbound Highway 198. The victim, Rafael Altamirano, of Tulare, was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle and was about to enter the westbound highway when he lost control of the bike at a nearby stoplight.

Altamirano’s motorcycle tumbled to the ground on its side. He was fatally struck by a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan as he was getting back up.

Altamirano died at the scene, police said. The driver of the other motorcycle, Harold Dunkin, 71, of Tulare, was unharmed.
