Missing stop sign may have role in fatal Pixley crash

A missing stop sign may have contributed to a fatal traffic collision Tuesday morning in the Pixley area, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A 54-year-old Earlmart man was killed.

The incident occurred about 11:51 a.m. The man was driving west on Wright Avenue, approaching Elm Street, in a 2001 Chevrolet. Juan Lopez, 24, of Pixley was northbound on Elm Street in a 2011 GMC.

Traffic on Elm Street has the right-of-way, but the CHP said a stop sign was missing on the east side of the intersection. The Chevrolet driver failed to stop at the intersection and was broadsided by the GMC.

The victim’s identity has not been released by the Tulare County coroner.
