A 50-year-old Fresno woman is dead after she was hit by a train while trying to get her dog off the tracks, Fresno police said.
Officers were called to Diana Street and Grant Avenue in central Fresno just before 2:30 p.m. Monday. An EMS team was already at the scene for an accident involving a BNSF train that struck a pedestrian, said Lt. Joe Gomez. The woman, who was not identified pending notification of family, died at the scene, he said. The dog survived.
An early investigation indicates that the woman, who lives a block away, was jumping up and down on the tracks as the northbound train approached.
“It was possible she was trying to get the train to stop because her small dog jumped on the tracks,” he said. “It appears the female tried to grab her dog from the tracks when she was struck by the train, which knocked her to the ground killing her.”
