Fresno firefighters rescue woman, 85, from her burning home

Fresno firefighters rescued an 85-year-old, wheelchair-bound woman Monday night who was trapped inside her burning home near Tower District.

Fresno fire Battalion Chief Lawrence French said the two-alarm fire started at 8:05 p.m. at a home on the 1300 block of North Echo Avenue near East Floradora Avenue. Three people were inside the home when the blaze erupted, French said, including the elderly woman.

Firefighters had to deal with two other burning structures and a broken power line to reach the woman, who was found unconscious and on the floor. Firefighters used CPR to resuscitate the woman before transporting her to Community Regional Medical Center.

All three victims had minor injuries and burns, French said.

The Fresno Fire Department and Fresno Police Department do not know if the cause of the fire was deliberate or accidental and are investigating.

French said the rescue, one day after fire Capt. Pete Dern sustained critical burns in a garage fire, came at an "emotionally charged time" for the department.
