A pedestrian was killed Monday morning when he tried to run east across Highway 99 just south of Highway 41 and was struck by four separate northbound vehicles, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash was reported about 6:20 a.m. and caused the CHP to close the northbound ramp from Highway 99 to Highway 41 in downtown Fresno. The ramp was reopened about 8:45 a.m.
The onramp from Jensen Avenue to northbound Highway 99 also was closed.
Initial reports were that a man was seen walking on the side of the freeway and running into traffic just before the collision. The pedestrian, whose name and age were withheld until family could be notified, died at the scene. No other details were immediately available.
