Man killed in crashA 62-year-old Clovis man was killed Sunday when his vehicle hit a tree off Highway 99 near Robertson Boulevard in Madera County.The victim, whose name was not made public by the California Highway Patrol, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 2008 Mazda Tribute veered off the road, struck a large tree and landed on its side around 1:30 p.m.The passenger, Vinna Kin Wah, 60, was transferred to Madera Community Hospital with moderate injuries.Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision, CHP said.

Drowning on KingsA 38-year-old Visalia woman drowned Saturday afternoon while kayaking with her family on the Kings River.Nadine Acosta was on the river with her husband and two children when her kayak overturned shortly before Fresno County sheriff’s deputies were called to the river, south of Highway 180 at 2:20 p.m. Her body was recovered three hours later.Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy Kathy Curtice, with the department’s Boat Enforcement Unit, said it was the first drowning on the Kings River this year, and the county’s first fatality involving a boating accident in 2008.The other kayakers were able to get out of the river safely.

Barbecue sparks blaze fire started by a propane barbecue Sunday caused major damage to a home in the 1600 block of Beverly Avenue in Clovis.Two adults and two children in the home were not injured in the 3:54 p.m. fire, the Clovis Fire Department said.The blaze caused an estimated $225,000 in damages.
