Crews fight fire on top of giant sequoia tree in Sierra

U.S. Forest Service crews Friday worked on a fire burning at the top of a giant sequoia tree in the southern Sierra Nevada in Tulare County.

A resident of Sequoia Crest, an area with privately owned homes, reported the fire Thursday around midnight, according to the Sequoia National Forest.

The tree is on private property but surrounded by the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Crews from the Forest Service's Tule River and Hot Springs ranger districts responded to the fire. A helicopter dropped water on the tree.

Burning debris caused a ground fire on about a quarter of an acre. It was contained Friday.

No updates on the tree fire were available Saturday.
