A driver was rushed to the hospital Tuesday morning after sustaining an apparent heart attack and crashing on Highway 99 near downtown Fresno, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The incident took place about 9 a.m. The driver of a Toyota Camry was southbound just past the westbound highway transition, according to CHP spokesman Victor Taylor. The driver swerved onto the righthand embankment, then swerved left across the traffic lanes to the fast lane. He was in the left lane when the Camry crashed into a big rig and drifted to the middle lane, Taylor said.
Other drivers, including a Fresno police sergeant, administered aid and CPR, Taylor said.
The man’s wife was a passenger in the car but apparently was not injured.
As traffic slowed behind the collision, there were several minor chain-reaction crashes.
