Two-alarm fire destroys six cars and damages others at a central Fresno car lot

A fire at a used car lot in central Fresno Thursday night destroyed a half-dozen cars and damaged other vehicles as well as an unoccupied home and a shed, the Fresno Fire Department said.

The two-alarm fire broke out around 8 p.m. at the “Cars 4 You” lot on Olive Avenue and Abby Street.

Fire Battalion Chief Lawrence French said there were nearly 40 cars on the lot, and six were destroyed while a number of others have fire damage. An unoccupied single-family home next to the lot also caught fire, but firefighters were able to contain it to the rear of the home and attic.

French said the home appeared to be lived in, but no one was home at the time.

What looked like a shed in the backyard was also destroyed, French said. The battalion chief didn’t know what sparked the fire, and didn’t have an estimate of the value of the damage, but said it was costly.

Residents in the area were left without power after Pacific Gas & Electric Co. shut off the electricity to help firefighters. The blaze was just feet from where power lines were located.

Nearly 40 firefighters knocked down the fire in around 15 minutes despite wind helping it to spread, French said.
