Uber co-founder’s parents identified as boating crash victims on Pine Flat Lake
The parents of Uber’s co-founder were identified as the victims of a boating accident at Pine Flat Lake on Friday.
Bonnie Kalanick, 71, of Northridge, was killed in the crash. She was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Saturday. Her son is Travis Kalanick.
An Uber spokesperson released a statement saying, “Last night Travis and his family suffered an unspeakable tragedy. His mother passed away in a devastating boating accident near Fresno and his father is in serious condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with Travis and his family in this heartbreaking time.”
Kalanick was with her husband, Donald Kalanick, when their boat struck a rock and sank. They were taken to Trimmer Springs Marina, where she died.
Donald Kalanick was flown to Community Regional Medical Center. The accident was reported between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Crews responded toward the back of the lake after the boat sank, and the couple was found on the shore.
An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, and the incident is under investigation.
Late Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office announced that its Dive Team and Boating Enforcement Unit had pulled the wrecked boat to the surface. It was stored as evidence, according to a news release, awaiting examination by investigators.
A dog also was on board during the crash, according to the release, and is now in the care of friends and family.
