A Visalia news reporter is in serious condition after she was hit while walking across a downtown Visalia intersection by an alleged drunken driver operating a taxi Saturday night.
Visalia police said they responded to the accident, where Visalia Times-Delta reporter Sheyanne Romero, 28 , was hit by a car. The newspaper reported Romero was crossing the intersection at Oak and Court streets around 9 p.m. when she was hit.
Visalia police on Monday identified the driver as Tracy Chapman, 48, who was driving an ABC Taxi Chevrolet van north on Court when she hit Romero. Police said Chapman was under the influence of a controlled substance. She was arrested and booked into Tulare County jail.
Kaweah Delta Medical Center spokeswoman Laura Florez-McCusker said Romero was still in serious condition Sunday. The Times-Delta reported Sunday that Romero suffered severe head injuries. On Facebook Sunday, the Times-Delta said Romero was breathing on her own.
