Events are planned in the central San Joaquin Valley this week commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including:
Madera: 10 a.m., B-K Lighting, 40429 Brickyard Drive, 559-438-5800. The company raised more than $50,000 on behalf of active and retired service members in need. The check will be accepted by retired Marine Johnny Jones who spent two years in recovery at Walter Reed Medical Center after being injured by an improvised explosive device in 2010.
Fresno: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Fresno Vet Center, 1320 E. Shaw Ave., Suite 125, 559-487-5660. The event also honors the 50th anniversary of Vietnam. Lunch will be provided.
Clovis: 8:30 a.m., Schneider Electric, 3500 Pelco Way, 559-284-0539. The ceremony will include the lowering of the flag, wreath procession and placement at the memorial, and the playing of taps and the national anthem. Retired New York firefighter and 9/11 survivor Andy Isolano, Combined Command Military Honor Guard, Marine Rifle Team, Pipes and Drum team, local law enforcement, fire and emergency service personnel will be in attendance.
Mariposa: 2 p.m., Arts Park, 5013 Highway 140. The community is invited to meet at Mariposa VFW to walk to the 9/11 memorial where Staff Sgt. Bryce Battershell will speak about “22 Too Many,” veterans health awareness. There will be prayer and a moment of silence during the raising of the new 9/11 flag. VFW Post 9454 and Auxiliary will host the 9/11 Honor Our Fallen Heros at 7 p.m. at Coulterville Park. After a short presentation the group will begin a candlelight walk down Main St.
